Corn Dogs Barrell Thunder, Now Sit at 9-2

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs marched into Illinois on Wednesday and left with a 7-2 victory over the WDS Thunder, where hard hit balls and excellent base running made all the difference.

Check out the box score from the game and updated season stats.

Luka Zakman received the start for the Corn Dogs, his third of the season. Zakman excelled, posting five innings with just two hits and three strikeouts. Just one run scored while he was on the mound but it was unearned.

The Thunder threatened early, with the unearned run coming off of a hard-hit single in the bottom of the second. However, their triumph was short lived.

Following a Colin Horneman double, Denham Kozy caught every piece of a pitch from Charlie Strock and deposited it over the left field wall. That shot was enough to inject adrenaline into the Corn Dogs bats for the rest of the game.

Jorgie Vasquez kept up the scoring in the fourth, scoring John Connors off a single of his own.

After the fourth, the Corn Dogs saw four more one-RBI hits, all coming from different bats. A bullpen consisting of Luke Diekman and Vasquez did a great job of keeping the door closed against the Thunder.

Kozy’s performance stuck out on the day, as he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, one run and his second home run of the season. Kozy’s campaign was enough to earn him an Ironman Player of the Game.

Ultimately, the Corn Dogs came away with a 7-2 victory and now boast a 9-2 record.

The Corn Dogs look ahead to Friday, June 14 when they take on the Southsiders at home in Crown Point. Game time is 7 p.m.
