Corn Dogs Baseball is Back! Thursday is Opening Day

By Noel Fary

Lake County Corn Dogs begin the 2024 season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 against the Beecher Muskies at Legacy Fields in Crown Point, Indiana.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with all the usual game day activities available for fans to enjoy, including the Corn Dogs’ beer garden, kid’s zone and much more.

Following a league championship series appearance in 2023 and winning the league title in 2022, the Corn Dogs look to keep the mustard flowing against a variety of new opponents this season.

While there are plenty of familiar faces returning in 2024, including Tyler “Mr. Corndog” Schultz and the dynamic Jake Thometz, Lake County also welcomes a host of new faces that are sure to bring the heat.

Corn Dogs Majority Owner Ralph Flores trusts that this team has the right players to produce their most talented roster yet — with plenty of exciting baseball to come.

New faces on the team include Robert Tate Jr., a freshman who starts at shortstop for Jackson State, and Christian Holmes, who has Division I experience at Kansas State and is one of many players on the South Suburban College baseball roster. Tate and Holmes are just a glimpse into the exciting roster the Corn Dogs plan to have on display at Legacy Fields this season.

Joshua Magallon is a current senior at Merrillville High School looking forward to catching some games behind the plate. Magallon is committed to Roosevelt University Chicago. Ivan Balboa, currently playing for South Suburban College, is returning to the bump for a third season with the team.

All games will be broadcast on WJOB Radio AM 1230 and FM 104.7 and streamed live on JEDtv and Facebook Live.

The Corn Dogs broadcasting team features the voices of play-by-play man Noel Fary and color commentator Garrett Larson.

Following opening day, the Corn Dogs will host the Little Calumet Beavers on Friday, May 24at 7 p.m. and the Thunder of the Crestwood Collegiate League on Saturday, May 25at 4 p.m.
