The Lake County Corn Dogs kept up their hot streak against the Southland Vikings on Monday, defeating them 10-4 in a game where the bats stayed hot and hits came at exactly the right time.
With the win, the Corn Dogs, 2022 Northern League champions and secure a spot in the playoffs.
The game began quietly in Dowling Park, with both teams scoreless headed into the top of the third. Gavin Gallagher, Corn Dogs starting pitcher, and Jacob Cook, the Vikings’ starter, worked their way out of trouble multiple times early.
After Zach Zychowski was hit by pitch and Kevin Hall doubled, Gavin Terry cleared the bases with a triple that rolled past the Vikings defense and put the Corn Dogs on the board early.
The Vikings responded by tying the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, after Charlie Schau drove in two runners with a base hit. Gallagher gave up six walks on the day but limited the damage overall and escaped with the game even.
The Corn Dogs wasted no time taking the lead back and looked to put the game away in the top of the seventh. Multiple Corn Dogs bats came through, delivering five runs, including a Tyler Schultz double that kept up his hot streak. On July 25, Schultz was named Northern League Player of the Week.
Terry finished the day 2-4, with 2 runs, 4 RBIs and a walk while earning himself Macron Player of the Game.
Mark Tor and Ryan Troxel finished the game on the mound for the Corn Dogs, ensuring the Vikings scored no more.
Now on a three-game winning streak and their sights set on the regular season title, the Corn Dogs head back home for the final homestand of the regular season to take on the Griffith Generals on Tuesday at 7 p.m., with consecutive games scheduled through Sunday.
