Corn Dogs defeat Vikings, Complete Weekend Sweep

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs finished their three-game homestand with an exclamation point on Sunday, coming away with a 11-3 victory over the Southland Vikings and marking a weekend sweep and a 14-4 record on the season.

Jake Thometz started on the mound for the Corn Dogs, delivering against a tough Southland roster. Thometz finished the day with four innings pitched, two earned runs, five strikeouts and no walks.

Check out the box score from the game.

Thometz had a great cushion to work with courtesy of the Corn Dogs offense, as they wasted no time putting five runs on the board after just two innings of play.

Multiple Corn Dogs had great days at the plate, including Kevin Hall and Ranko Stevanovic, who hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall in the fourth inning. The Vikings had plenty of ground to cover after the blast, down 6-2 and facing a shutdown Corn Dogs bullpen.

Harrison Dubois, Zach Beerling and Austin Pizer finished off the game for the Corn Dogs, allowing just four hits and one run through four innings. Solid relief pitching has been a trend for the Corn Dogs this season.

The Corn Dogs capped off the victory in the bottom of the eighth, grabbing four more insurance runs, two of which coming from Hayden Matulich off a base-clearing double. Matulich is on a tear in the Northern League as of recently, grabbing himself another Macron Player of the Game along with Jake Thometz.

After the weekend sweep, the Corn Dogs appear to have left their up and down tendencies behind them, starting to work towards full potential as the season enters full swing.

The Corn Dogs are back in action against the Vikings on Tuesday at Dowling Park in Hammond. Game time is 5 p.m.
