Corn Dogs Open 2024 Season With Home Win Over the Beecher Muskies

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs opened their gates for their first game of the 2024 season on Thursday against the Beecher Muskies. In what was a night filled with festivities and electric baseball, the Corn Dogs finished on top of the Muskies, 6-2.

After a scoreless top of the first courtesy of pitcher Adam Walters, the Corn Dogs immediately carried over their high-powered offense from last season into the current one. Following a Christian Holmes trip to third base, Tyler Schultz drove him home with a sacrifice fly and grabbed himself the first Corn Dogs RBI of the season.

Timely hits played a large role in the win, with multiple Corn Dogs bats coming up big with two outs on the board. Jason Ballard extended the lead for the Corn Dogs in the bottom of the fourth, sending Schultz and Tyler Stewart home off of a single.

Billy Jones, another new face for the Corn Dogs, made a huge difference at the plate and on the base paths, going 3 for 4 and grabbing extra bases left and right.

Following a late rally by the Muskies, who got as close as 4-2 in the top of the 7th, the Corn Dogs sealed the deal with patient at bats from both Joey Russo and Ballard in the bottom of the inning. The Corn Dogs held their lead 6-2 to the final out, closing out a successful opening day with a victory.

Walters shined on the mound in his 2024 debut, pitching 6.1 innings with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. Corn Dog’s head coach Justin Huisman had high praise for the returning All-Star.

“He was getting ahead of a lot of guys the first six inning, he was attacking,” Huisman said. “When he did get in trouble, he got the pitches that he needed.”

With a new team, but the same fan base, Huisman felt pleased to continue putting on a show for the community and meet the team he will oversee for the summer.

“It’s always great, fans are great,” Huisman said. “The support is always there and the guys are great. It’s always fun on the first day getting to know the guys.”

The Corn Dogs look ahead to Friday when they match up against the Little Calumet Beavers in Crown Point at 7 p.m.
