Corn Dogs Outlast Late Puma Comeback, Improve to 12-3

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs defeated the New Lenox Pumas 7-4 on Thursday, scoring all their runs in the first two innings and holding off the Pumas for just long enough to scratch another tally mark in the win column.

Check out the box score from the game and the updated season stats.

Luka Zakman started on the mound for the Corn Dogs, fighting off a tough Puma offense for four innings. Zakman finished his appearance allowing two runs, both unearned, and three strikeouts.

The Corn Dogs offense started off their day seeing their entire order bat around almost twice, with only Owen Winters, hitting ninth, not receiving his second at bat through the first two innings.

Off resounding hits from Denham Kozy, Jason Ballard, Robert Tate Jr., and others, the Corn Dogs scored seven runs through the first and second inning.

The Puma pitching staff battened down the hatches for the rest of the game, not allowing the Corn Dogs to score another run. With this adjustment, they set their offense in the perfect spot to mount a comeback.

With two runs scored in the top of the third and fifth, the Pumas trailed by just three runs. However, Joey Merrick and Garrett Benko had other plans, allowing just two combined hits through four innings and shutting down the Puma offense entirely.

Plenty of Corn Dogs swung the bat well, with every player reaching at least once. Matt Santana stood out amongst the crowd, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and some phenomenal play behind the plate as always.

The Corn Dogs are right back at Legacy Fields on Friday, June 21, facing off against The Show of the Crestwood Collegiate League for the first time this season. Game time is 7 p.m.
