Corn Dogs Outlast Pumas, Advance to Firecracker Tournament Final

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs defeated the New Lenox Pumas of the Chicago Suburban League 10-8 on Sunday in a somewhat sloppy game where errors made a difference and the Corn Dogs streaky hitting almost cost them the matchup.

Check out the box score from the game and the updated season stats.

After a slow offensive day one of the Firecracker Tournament, the Corn Dogs had one of their best offensive innings in the top of the second.

The Corn Dogs scored 9 runs, with 6 of them coming after two outs had already been posted. Every bat got involved, including a familiar face in his season debut, Gavin Terry.

With a big cushion to work with, the Corn Dogs continued to work through a quiet Puma offense.

Luka Zakman started on the mound for the Corn Dogs, posting a flawless game through the first four innings. Trouble struck in the fifth, when the Pumas offense found new life and left Zakman with 9 hits and 5 earned runs.

Ivan Balboa and Colin Cirks came in to back up Zakman, however the Pumas put the game within 2 runs after a 3-run bottom of the sixth.

Ultimately, the Corn Dogs held the Pumas off just long enough to come away with a tough 10-8 victory and advance to 20-6-1 on the season.

Denham Kozy shined against the Pumas, going 4-for-4 with 3 runs, 2 stolen bases and an RBI.

The Corn Dogs look ahead to Monday, July 8t, when they take on the Windy City Baseball Club of the Crestwood Collegiate League on the road at 5 p.m.
