By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs went 1-1 on the first day of the Firecracker Tournament, dropping game 1 against the Beecher Muskies of the Chicago Suburban League 4-1 and grabbing a big win over the Little Calumet Beavers of the Crestwood Collegiate League 3-0.

Check out the box scores from Game 1 and Game 2 along with the updated season stats.

Adam Walters received the start in game 1 against the Muskies, pitching an absolute gem for the first five innings of the game. While Walters finished with 1 run, 3 strikeouts, and four hits, 3 came at the end of his otherwise shutdown outing.

The offense did not get rolling in game 1, with the Corn Dogs totaling just three hits against the Muskies, two of which coming from Colin Horneman. Despite some late game flashes, the Corn Dogs dropped the matchup 4-1.

With their offensive woes behind them, the Corn Dogs jumped ahead early in game 2 against the beavers, grabbing two runs in the bottom of the third off the bats of Jason Ballard and Matt Santana.

Eric Santaguida started on the mound for the Corn Dogs, pitching 5 scoreless innings with just one hit and four strikeouts. Santaguida’s efforts earned himself the Ironman Player of the Game.

The combination of lights out pitching and just enough offense to hold the beavers away, the Corn Dogs grabbed a 3-0 victory.

With day 1 in the books, the Corn Dogs look ahead to Sunday, July 7 when they take on the New Lenox Pumas of the Chicago Suburban League in game 3 of the Firecracker Tournament at 3 p.m.
