Corn Dogs Walk-Off Pumas, Rise to 6-1

By Noel Fary

The Lake County Corn Dogs reigned victorious over the New Lenox Pumas, grabbing a 6-5 walk-off victory and maintaining their undefeated home record this season on Thursday.

Check out the box score from the game and updated season stats.

Luka Zakman received the start for the Corn Dogs, proving himself as an extremely reliable starter once again. Zakman threw four innings for the Corn Dogs and only allowed one run due to a steal of home plate.

It is not a matter of stopping the Corn Dogs offense this season, rather containing them, as once again the scoring began early. However, while the Corn Dogs did grab a 2-0 lead after two innings innings, they also left six runners stranded.

A late burst of offense from the Pumas saw them take a late lead, scoring three in the sixth inning and one in the fifth. For the first time in the game, the Corn Dogs saw themselves playing from behind.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Corn Dogs needed to park the bus and ensure they entered the bottom of the ninth still within striking distance.

Jake Thometz saw action as a closer for the Corn Dogs, throwing three scoreless innings and anchoring a stout defensive stand.

While Puma pitcher Andrew Bolman delivered strikeout after strikeout, including two in the bottom of the ninth, a walk by Christian Holmes and the go ahead hit by catcher Matt Santana lifted the Corn Dogs over the Pumas in walk-off fashion and gave them a 6-5 victory.

The Corn Dogs look ahead to Friday, June 7 to continue their homestand, facing the Bombers for the first time this season at 7 p.m., and play again on Sunday, June 9 versus against the Beavers with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
