Corn Dogs Walk-Off Thunder, Improve to 3-0

By Noel Fary

In their first come-from-behind victory of the season, the Lake County Corn Dogs chipped away at the Thunder, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to grab an 8-7 walk-off victory.

The day started off as a pitcher’s duel, with three straight scoreless frames posted for both teams. Kevin Corcoran received the start for the Corn Dogs and thrived in his first appearance on the mound, posting 10 strikeouts in just 4.2 innings pitched.

For the first time this season the Corn Dogs trailed, as the Thunder scored one run off a double in the top of the fourth.

Denham Kozy had a quick response, ripping the first home run of the season over the right field wall, tying the game at 1-1.

The Thunder proved to be some of the toughest competition yet this season, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, sitting with a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Of course, the high-flying Corn Dogs offense did not let that slide. Three straight hits off the bat of Billy Jones, Tyler Schultz and Joey Russo saw the Corn Dogs take a two-run lead. Russo’s hit soared over the left field wall for a no-doubt home run that gave the Corn Dogs their first lead of the day.

Undaunted by the cardiac Corn Dogs, the Thunder scratched three more runs on the board in the top of the eighth. With a one-run lead, the Thunder needed two scoreless innings to hand the Corn Dogs their first loss of the season.

With the game on the line in the bottom of the ninth, the Corn Dogs loaded the bases off three straight hit-by-pitches. All it took was two more wild pitches to send the game-tying and game-winning runs across the plate.

With the 8-7 victory, the Corn Dogs won for a third time at Legacy Fields remaining undefeated at 3-0.

The Corn Dogs look to head on the road for the first time this season on Tuesday, May 28 for a matchup against the Southsiders at 5 p.m.
