During his senior season at Munster High School, het pitched 63.1 innings, striking out 110 batters and holding opposing hitters to a .170 average. During a six-start stretch, Schaum struck out 72 hitters in 39.1 innings. His ERA for the year was 1.66.


Schaum and the Munster Mustangs won a regional championship, getting to the semi-state game where he struck-out 10 hitters in game one and hit a three-run home run in the second game.
